Next Tuesday, August 7th, is National Night Out (NNO)! During this annual event, residents are encouraged to socialize with their neighbors and local law enforcement. If your block is participating in this years event please remember to stay hydrated. If it gets too hot outside, go inside where there is air conditioning.
Since 1981, National Night Out is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
- Generate support for, and participation in local anti-crime programs
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
If your community decided not to register because of the hot temperatures, your block can make alternative plans to celebrate in a cooler month. For just $20 you can register through the street department to obtain a permit to shut down your block and have one amazing block party! Block Party Form
Gelinda Connell, project manager for security and social services at Park Central Development states:
“Residents do not have to wait for National Night Out to have a block party. Block parties can be put together for a low cost at anytime of the year. They have the ability to make a positive impact on the neighborhood and at the same time it increases the unity and solidarity of that block.”
Thinking about having a block party, but not sure how to go about it? Have no fear. Park Central Development has suggested some party ideas that will sure to make you party the best in the neighborhood:
Chalk drawing contest, home improvement award, straight A student award, watermelon or cake eating contest, anti-drug/anti-crime rally, recognize your neighborhood police officer, scavenger hunt, karaoke, crime prevention tips, pot-luck, sack races, neighborhood clean-up, meet a new neighbor contest, etc.
